GLACIER HIKES

Kennicott Wilderness Guides proudly presents........the Root Glacier! People from all over the world agree that our backyard river of ice is the 'coolest' thing around! Swirling ice canyons, dramatic holes in the ice, raging waterfalls, and an iceberg-ridden lake are just a few of the glacier's charms. Usually by mid-May the lower streches of the glacier, called the ablation zone, are free of snow which makes un-roped travel safe and opens up unbelievable opportunities to hike and explore! You've gotta check this out!

Root Glacier Tour
1/2 day hike, 4-5 hours
$60 per person for group tour
$100 per person for private tour
(prices are for a 2 person minimum)

Ice canyon

From our office it's a 2 mile stroll to the white ice of the glacier. Once there we'll strap on our crampons (metal spikes for your shoes) and show you around the other-worldly moonscape that awaits. We'll show you how to use your crampons correctly to safely view the blue-pools, deep holes, and cascading waterfalls that make up the glacier's convoluted surface. When we get back you'll wonder how the hours could pass so quickly!

Absolutely no experience is necessary.

Root Glacier Tour
Full day hike, 7-8 hours

Hiking on glacier ice

West Side Interpretive Tour
4.5 - 5 hours - Maximum group sixe of 6
$60

This hike stays off the ice but gives you a glimpse into the most active and rapidly changing area in the vicinity! We begin at the footbridge over the Kennicott River and follow a path that goes along the West Side of the glacier. Collapsing ice towers and deep gorges characterize the rock-strewn ice here, along with deep rumbling noises from the glacier's belly. We'll teach you about the geology, ecology, and fascinating plant life, and if we're lucky we'll spot some wildlife in this less-frequented area.

Absolutely no experience is necessary.

Calving glacier ice

Donoho Lakes

Mountain lake
8 hours
$125 per for 2-3 people,
$100 per for 4+ people

This is a trip that covers a lot of ground, but whose payoff is indescribable. We head across the Root Glacier and scramble up the rocky lateral moraine, leaving our crampons with the ice and hiking two miles through the forest before reaching the lake. It's a great way to experience the wonders of the glacier, spend time back in the world of vegetation, and return via ice.

Ice wall climbing

Full-Day Ice Climb

Maximum Client/Guide Ratio of 4 to 1 - $110 - group tour rate

Your guides show and explain to you the basic safety measures involved with climbing ice; checking your harness, using your crampons and ice axes properly, and other important aspects of safe climbing. Confidence in them, and trust in your gear makes your day more enjoyable.

Spending a full day on the glacier gives clients an opportunity to become familiar with their equipment, learn the fundamentals of climbing ice, build confidence, and kick some butt. Hanging out on a wall of vertical ice, or being lowered into the guts of the glacier, can be simultaneously empowering, exhilarating, terrifying, and fun.

ALPINE   HIKES

The mountains surrounding Kennicott and McCarthy are a hiker's dream, with beautiful ridges and countless alpine meadows. If you'd rather go up while you're hiking and don't mind sweating while you're exploring, you should consider one of our Alpine Hikes. There aren't any views in the world quite like these...rising from 4,000 to 11,000 feet above the glaciers below, the peaks around here are BIG. Prepare to be blown away!
Amazon Rock Glacier Traverse
10 - 12 hours
$135 per for 2-3 people,
$125 per for 4+ people

This hike takes you 3000 feet up the Amazon Rock Glacier, scrambling to a high alpine ridge and 360-degrees of sweet views. Conditions permitting, we then dump over the other side and follow a dreamy (had to say it) ridge towards the Stairway Icefall, making our way down to Erie Lake and the Root Glacier. Stopping to stare at the surroundings, and the amount of ground covered, usually makes this a long day, still having 5 miles of glacier walking, from the lake to Kennicott. This trip is for experienced hikers (legs for a long hike) who want a big-time alpine experience in a day.
Big Alaska views
Classic Alaska ridges

Fireweed Mountain
10-12 hours
$135 per for 2-3 people,
$125 per for 4+ people

A ridgewalker's paradise...combine easy access, mellow grassy meadows, craggy upper heights, and the biggest views of Mount Blackburn and the Chitina Valley and you've got Fireweed Mountain! This series of summits, all connected by ridges, is a premier peak scramble that gives a unique bird's eye view of Kennicott and McCarthy from across the valley. You'll earn these views; the way up is more of a 'route' then a trail and over the course of the day we'll gain about 5,500 vertical feet, so be ready for a workout....one you'll never forget!

THE  HISTORIC  KENNECOTT  MINES

If you're looking for a full day's hike in the mountains AND a trip back in time, come with us to the mines! At the turn of the 20th century the richest copper lode ever found was discovered here, which gave birth to the towns of Kennecott and McCarthy and many lifetime's worth of stories and history! The Kennecott Copper Mining Co. operated in these hills from 1908 - 1938, extracting about 500,000 tons of copper from a number of mines located in the peaks above Kennecott, the 'company town' where the ore was crushed, concentrated, and sent out on the railroad. Eventually the whole operation was abandoned, leaving behind historical treasures and engineering marvels. Let's go explore the past, let's go to the mines!

Jumbo Mine

Historic Kennicott mine

8 hours
$125 per for 2-3 people,
$100 per for 4+ people

This mine was where the purest copper ore was found. Chalcocite deposits from this area were assayed at nearly 80% pure, in comparison to the 4-6% purity normally found in copper mines! This basin also features the dramatic face of the Castle, a craggy rock tower that looms overhead, and the outrageously leaning bunkhouse where the miners once lived. Stand back, we've all got our bets out on when it will finally collapse!

Historic Kennecott mine

Erie Mine

Moderate to Challenging
8-10 hours
$135 per for 2-3 people,
$110 per for 4+ people

Getting to this mine has the greatest adventure factor of them all! Once we leave the Root Glacier trail and start heading up the steep gully that is the beginning of the route to the bunkhouse you'll be glad that you hired a guide! There is no trail from here on and the easiest way up to the buildings perched amongst the cliffs is not-so-straightforward, involving some rock scrambling, route-finding, and tricky traversing. We'll show you the safest way there and spend the day exploring the dilapidated buildings and taking in the immense face of the Stairway Icefall, which can't be missed from here.

FLY - IN  DAY  TRIPS

The plane buzzes away -- you're left surrounded by 13.2 million acres of pristine mountain wilderness. See what it feels like to be immersed in such mountain splendor, to experience remoteness and solitude. Then, at the end of our magical day, our ride back to 'civilization' returns and we take off from the tiny backcountry airstrip and head to the comforts of town life, just in time for dinner. America's largest wilderness CAN be experienced in just one day, ask us how!

Donoho Fly-In / Hike-Back
8 hours
$435 per person for 2 people, $385 per person for 3+

This day hike is a hard one to beat. We board a bush plane in McCarthy and fly up the Kennicott Glacier before landing alongside Donoho Lake. The hike begins by following faint trails, crossing streams, and working our way alongside two lakes which drain the Gates Glacier, and are swimmer friendly. The views of Donoho Mountain, Mt. Blackburn, and other surrounding mountains are postcard perfect. After lunch at Donoho Falls (where the lakes drain and drop hundreds of feet below the glacier) the crampons go on and the glacier experience begins. White ice, caves, blue lakes, gaping moulins, and massive moraines mark the way across the Root Glacier to the 2-mile trail back to Kennicott. Anticipate an 8-hour day, and make sure to pack a lunch.

There are options to hike up an alpine ridge, turn the corner for large views of Hidden Lake and Hidden Valley, or head up-glacier for a closer look at 11,000 vertical feet of Mt. Blackburn. We also bring along crampons if you're interested in checking out the Kennicott Glacier for part of your day. The return flight home is the cherry on top of what guarantees to be one of the most exciting sundaes you've ever experienced.
