skills and knowledge and keep them coming back year after year. Our guides
are skilled and experienced professionals with a depth of outdoor knowledge.

Kevin
Smith
Kevin moved to Alaska long ago by way of Vermont and Utah, in search
of bigger mountains and more snow. He first landed in Girdwood, where
he spent many winters skiing bigger mountains with more snow. Kevin
found & built a home in McCarthy and started climbing, backpacking,
and guiding for KWG 13 years ago; while also ice-climbing, skiing
& snowboarding everything in sight around Valdez and throughout
the Chugach. Although he's summited many of the BIG ones (Denali,
Blackburn, Marcus Baker
) he mainly inspires us by prioritizing
mountains in his daily life and never giving up on the dream. |

Greg Runyan
While living in Alaska, Greg came to climb Mt.Blackburn in '95 and
has been coming to the Wrangell-St.Elias ever since. In recent years
he built a log cabin here and makes McCarthy his home. Greg spent
12 winters in Alaska skiing and ice climbing in the Chugach Mountains.
Spring usually finds him climbing and guiding the big mountains
of Alaska. Trips down south for rock climbing and guiding in Argentina
fill some of the other months for him.

Elizabeth
Horan
Elizabeth originally hails from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In 1991,
Elizabeth moved to California to climb and trek its mountains and
deserts. Once she had explored many mountains in the Pacific Northwest,
she moved on to South America for its high altitude climbing and challenging
terrain. Elizabeth's greatest enjoyment is sharing high mountain experience
and helping others achieve their goals. She has successfully led clients
to the summit of Aconcagua in Argentina and Denali in Alaska, and
has been bringing her enormous amount of experience to KWG
for the last 3 years. |

Taylor
Brown
Taylor started guiding at KWG at the age of 19 and has been pursuing
guiding as a career ever since. He is a EMT-IV, is Avalanche III Certified,
completed the AMGA Ski Guide course in January 2007, and has worked
for Alaska Mountain Guides. Originally from Summit County Colorado,
you can find him in the winter months with fellow guides Chris and
Monte climbing hard ice and mixed climbs in Vail and all over the
state of Colorado. Recently Taylor has been teaching the Outdoor Education
Program at Colorado Mountain College. Taylor's passion in life is
"skiing climbing routes," and loves to share his enthusiasm
and energy for the mountains with every one. KWG breathed a collective
sigh of relief when Taylor began building a cabin on his property
in McCarthy in 2005. |

Chris Smith
Chris gained his wealth of climbing and skiing knowledge growing
up in Summit County, Colorado, where in the winter of 2006/07 he
served on the Copper Mountain Ski Patrol. He caught the Alaska bug
3 years ago in the Kennicott / McCarthy region and has become a
regular part of the local scenery. In 2007 Chris spent close to
30 days on the Nabesna Glacier, first climbing Blackburn with KWG
guides Taylor and Monte, and then guiding clients on Rime Peak.
We're lucky to have him on board, his enthusiasm for climbing and
mountaineering is very contagious.

Betsy
Bradbury
KWG experienced a true windfall in 2006 when Betsy, a 5-year rambler
of the Wrangell mountains, signed on as our up-and-coming expert guide.
She quickly proved herself to be a natural, particularly when it came
to client care and consideration. Her enthusiasm for exploration,
wilderness savvy, and rapport with people are unique and unparalleled.
Since first grasping an ice axe so many years ago she has become somewhat
of an addict and never ceases to surprise us. 2008 will be Betsy's
3rd year on the KWG roster. |

Matt
Smith
Matt has built his home in Kennicott and splits his time between guiding
and teaching climbing skills in the Alaska Range, the Chugach, and
here in the Wrangell St. Elias. He is a 10-year KWG veteran and former
manager whose expertise, knowledge, and skills are an invaluable asset
to this company. In the winter of '06 - '07 Matt worked as a guide
in Antarctica. He has worked with the highly reputable Alaska Mountaineering
School in Talkeetna, and as a heli-ski guide in Valdez. Work aside,
Matt and his wife Meghan have been further developing their Kennicott
homestead and enjoy prioritizing wilderness exploration in their lives. |

Meghan
Seifert
Meghan is a native of Girdwood, Alaska and currently resides in Kennicott
with her husband Matt. She is a professional and passionate climber
and skier with experience in the Chugach, the Alaska Range (Denali),
the Wrangell St. Elias, and elsewhere throughout Alaska. She first
joined up with KWG in 2003 and has inspired us all with her work ethic,
enthusiasm, and resilience. |

Paul Hanis
Paul first appeared on KWG's doorstep immediately after a 160-mile
solo trek from Nabesna, on the north side of the range. He has covered
hundreds of miles through Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and other
parts of the state, and reached dozens of summits in Alaska's mountains.
Paul has twice survived (and once won) the grueling 160-mile Alaska
Mountain Wilderness Classic adventure race, and seems to love finding
new places to explore Alaska's remote rivers with his packraft.
He enjoys the spectacular Alaskan winters skiing, snowboarding,
and ice climbing. A fan of all things frozen, he has achieved international
acclaim as a snow and ice sculptor, placing in the top ranks at
the World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska. 2008 will
be Paul's 6th year in the KWG family.

Mike
Murphy
Mike retired from a five-year term managing the daily operations of
the guide service after 2006 and looks forward to once again spending
more time in the field than in the office. Mike and his wife have
built a cabin on their 10-acre McCarthy aspen grove and currently
spend their winters in Anchorage. Arriving in Alaska in '96, Mike
has spent years exploring both the Wrangells and the Western Chugach
and enjoys sharing his enthusiasm and skills with clients looking
to raise their wilderness standards. |

Zack
Barrett
Zack came to KWG in the spring of 2006. A long-time McCarthy summer
resident and winter Mt. Baker skier, Zack paid his KWG dues and earned
his way onto the crew 2 years ago. His intimate knowledge of this
area, and personal investment in the community, is a great asset to
our company. Known in some circles for his skiing ability, Zack recently
made a name for himself with a double-page photo in Powder Magazine.
Zack is authentic McCarthy with a twist of Kennicott and we are glad
he turned our way. |

Brandi Mayes
Brandi's love of the great outdoors began near her childhood home
in Montana. She spent her youth exploring the rivers and woods nearby,
finding much in nature to stimulate her curious mind. She attended
college in Utah where the desert beckoned, and with a new found
sense of freedom and her trusty Volkswagon van, she explored much
of the lower 48 whenever time allowed. Finally, she made her way
to Alaska in the spring of 1996 where she found the perfect combination
of nature and community. Alaska has nutured her passion for the
outdoors and become the land of her heart. Brandi enjoys hiking,
climbing, backpacking, reading, meditation, yoga, dancing and sharing
time and laughter with her fellow adventurers. 2008 will be Brandi's
3rd year with KWG.

Dorothy
Adler
Dorothy built her own cabin in the Wrangell mountains and has called
this area her year-round home for over 10 years. She has been in
the KWG family since the beginning. Dorothy is an accomplished high
altitude mountaineer, ice climber, and wilderness trekker, and is
not afraid to go skiing on a -50 F winter day. She has traversed
Denali from the West Buttress to Wonder lake, as well as participated
in rescue work in the Alaska range. She has been on Blackburn, Sanford,
and many other Alaska peaks. Her unique experiences and perspectives
of life in bush Alaska make her a guide that can offer an experience
like no other. Her recent adventure of motherhood has not slowed
her down very much, which doesn't suprise us at all!

John "Monte"
Montepare
Monte first joined the KWG crew in 2004. A native of Summit County,
Colorado, he has been skiing and climbing since he was knee-high
to a grasshopper. Since coming to the Wrangell mountains he has
expanded his experiences in the mountains and explored the ranges
surrounding Kennicott and McCarthy. In May of 2007 he successfully
summited Blackburn (16,390) and skied the North Ridge back down
to 7,000 feet with his friends and fellow KWG guides Chris and Taylor.
We're glad he'll be continuing to add his skill and motivation to
our roster in the years to come.

Gabriel Hoy
Gabriel
explored the Wrangells on his own in 2006 and came back in 2007
to learn the ropes of guiding. He has an extensive background in
rock climbing and wilderness backpacking, and in the last year has
been applying those skills to places a little more frozen. Besides
his proficiency with anchor systems and climbing techniques, he
always seems to be the guy to have around when our internet connection
isn't working or when we're experiencing other technical difficulties,
either in the field or in the office. We look forward to having
him with us again in 2008.

Dave Williams
If you ever want an obscure flower identified, or want to know the
composition of a rock, or are curious about the best way to access
a remote peak or valley, don't bother looking it up, just ask Dave!
There are few people more in tune with the beauty, magic, and fine
details of the Wrangell Mountains than our 10-year KWG veteran.
Dave was born and raised in Alaska and is a year-round Copper Valley
resident who is currently building a home in Kennicott. He specializes
in pioneering new routes in the park (by foot and snowmachine),
gourmet backcountry cooking, having a photographic memory, welding,
and moonlighting for the National Park Service.

Antoinette
In 2006 Antoinette, or "Nettie," put in more hours watching
the office porch and deck than anybody else. As a life-long Kennicott
resident she is filling the unofficial position of Mayor, taking over
for the previous cantankerous canine candidate, Rudy. She considers
the whole town to be her domain but is usually housed and fed by 10-year
KWG-er Dave, who still lives in the area. Nettie has logged hundreds
of days on the surrounding peaks and glaciers, and may join you for
the day if she is so inclined. We ask that you please not feed her....even
if she demands food by jumping around and shouting "Roo!"
You can pet her, but don't wake her up by surprise....she IS a Greenland
husky...... |
