Chisana gold rush elevation profile

This trip follows a section of the historic gold rush route between McCarthy and Chisana. Our hike begins in Chisana and follows a moderate creek upstream which opens up for views of the rarely seen Nutzotin Mountains to the north.

The route crosses onto an elevated plateau with bands of snowy peaks on one side and tundra meadows on the other. As you approach the White River the St. Elias Mountains introduce themselves straight ahead. Mt. Sulzer and Mt. Natazaht take the stage here, showing nearly 10,000 vertical feet of relief each! There is also an opportunity to hike to the summit of Solo Mountain for a big glimpse into Canada, which is only 25 miles from here.

This is a great trip for those looking to feel small in a big land, without climbing big elevation. It's also notable in its remoteness, going through a very seldom traveled area that is a longer bush flight from McCarthy. The extra money you'll pay for airfare is sure to pay you back with a true wilderness experience!
