Donoho Peak elevation profile

Donoho peak sits as an outpost between two giant glaciers, the Root and the Kennicott. It is a stately peak that is impossible to miss from Main Street Kennicott. Truly a Wrangell mountain classic, an adventure to the top of Donoho has it all: beautiful glacier travel, lush forested meadows, alpine lakes, prolific berries, bare rock ridges, and the 360-degree view of a lifetime!

This peak can be climbed from several routes, one of which features a high hanging glacier. The mountaineering opportunities abound and the campsites in the basin below are right out of a picture book. This is a great trekking peak for those that want the experience without having to pay for airfare. We generally budget a day's travel to and from the base of the climb, with one day actually climbing the mountain. The Donoho Lakes basin is thickly forested, but we know the sometimes faint trails through there that make travel in the area feasable!

The climb up the south-facing couloir is a scramble; no ropes are used. It is steep in places, and can be filled with snow, with moderate exposure and rockfall hazard in places. Sturdy boots are a must, and we'll provide the helmet, ice axe, and crampons that we recommend for this route. The climb up the north-facing slope is much snowier and steeper, and will require ropes and more mountaineering gear depending on the season. Be sure to contact us to determine which route best suits your goals!

We are often asked if Donoho can be climbed in one day, round trip from Kennicott. This is possible, and we've successfully done it with clients before, but be prepared for an 11 - 15 hour day that is certain to wear out even the most energetic hiker!
