2008 Alaska Backpacking

Stats: Total Distance: 12-20 miles

The mountains that line Glacier Creek are neck-strainers that defy description. There is a good chance you've never seen peaks quite like this - reaching 4,500 vertical feet straight up. For those base-camping in Chitistone Canyon this is a great day trip. There are spots to set up camp near the toe of the Twaharpies Glacier as well for those wanting a day trip onto the ice.

For those wanting to further explore Glacier Creek, once onto the glacier we can move closer to the imposing faces of the Twaharpies Mountains. This massif makes the neck-strainers you've been marveling at seem like childs-play. Experience carrying a multi-day pack and good physical conditioning is recommended for extended stays up the Twaharpies Glacier.

The Glacier Creek airstrip is one of the first to be snow-free in the spring and early June, making this place one of our early season favorites.
