2008 Alaska Backpacking

Stats: Total Distance: 12 - 20 miles

This is our backyard hike that takes you further from civilization than you can imagine possible.

We leave our office and hike an hour to the Root Glacier, the first step into the Blackburn Basin. This is a good place to get comfortable wearing crampons and for traveling on white ice. Glacial features include meandering streams, creeks, and rivers running over, through, and under the ice. We'll check out some crevasses, moulins, and other fascinating canyons - familiarizing you with how to travel safely around them.

Areas that can be accessed on this trip include the Donoho landmass, the Kennicott Glacier, the Gates Glacier, the Stairway Icefall, and Erie Lake & alpine areas of the McCarthy Formation (further up and alongside the Root Glacier). The scenery here is truly world class, offering a quintessential Wrangell Mountain experience without having to pay for bush airfare. The amount of ground we cover is dependent upon client abilities and desires. It is just as easy to spend a week out here as it is 3 days.
