2010 Alaska Backpacking

Stats: Total Distance: 12 - 20 miles
Fly 45 miles south into the Chugach mountains to a remote glacially dammed lake on the edge of the mighty Tana Glacier. This alpine paradise is one of the most beautiful gems in the Wrangell St. Elias parklands.

Options abound as glacier travel, hiking, exploring, wildlife viewing, and moderate mountaineering - as well as strolling barefoot in sand dunes, through alpine wild flowers, or into berry patches. There is towering terrain encircling this valley, with options to hike to alpine passes and cross over a mellow glacier with outrageous views of rock and ice. There is also access onto the West Fork of the Tana Glacier. The flight back and forth from McCarthy is a special flight-see and leaves you feeling remote and awed.
