An
excellent and very aesthetic mountain whose flanks and valleys
seldom see human footsteps, Pyramid Peak is the quintessential
Trekking Peak. We'll land in the upper reaches of Youngs creek
and stroll up the tundra until we reach the very aesthetic mountain,
which offers several routes of varying difficulty.
Choice
of route will depend largely on the season and client abilities.
In May and June, snow couloirs follow steep but fairly direct
lines to the summit. Later in the season these lines will melt
out and no longer be passable. There is a prominent icefall on
the southern flank of the mountain that offers late-season access
to the summit. The glacier is heavily crevassed and requires extensive
running belays and roped travel. The final 900' headwall presents
snow and ice climbing challenges that would satisfy anybody's
sense of adventure!
The trek continues from there, heading over an alpine ridge and
down a creek bed. We cross the easy creek multiple times as we
work our way down the valley, eventually ending at the May Creek
airstrip, which makes a great inexpensive pick-up spot. For those
that don't want to hike out, we can be picked up at our original
drop-off point, contact
us for more information and price quotes.
This
climb requires good physical conditioning and previous climbing
ability. As with any Trekking Peak, our packs tend to be heavy,
so be prepared to carry a load. This mountain's relatively modest
elevation should not be underestimated, it is a respectable mountaineering
challenge!
