2011 Alaska Backpacking

Stats: Total Distance: 14 - 21 miles

This is an airstrip perched high upon the Chitistone Plateau. You will land in an alpine environment with incredible views of the Wrangell and St. Elias Mountains, and wonder how the world could ever look so enormous!

Look over 'the edge' to the Chitistone River thousands of feet directly below. Hike around Chitistone Mountain and investigate the many geodes and fossils found in this geologically unique area. There is an option for experienced hikers to hike from this airstrip to the headwaters of the Nizina River for a multi-day float trip to Chitina. Pilots only drop-off and pickup in morning and early afternoon due to later-in-the-day winds.
