Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

TRIP  PLANNING

PROCESS
1. Reviewing website and/or other Wrangell St. Elias or Alaskan literature

2. Contacting KWG & discussing your desires, capabilities, expectations, ideas

3. Finalizing dates & deciding on a private tour, or being open for partners. We recommend that clients signing up for a fly in/fly out trip budget an extra day after the trip in case of a weather-related delay in being picked-up.

4. Reserving services via deposit: pilot, plane, guide, transport, lodging

5. Transportation cost is not included in trip prices listed. We will either help arrange transport to McCarthy, or provide it for you at shuttle cost.

6. We send you necessary paperwork - waiver, medical, gear, pre-trip bio. Forms can either be returned via regular mail or emailed to us. We like a heads up on major medical conditions.

7. Establish time and place for initial meeting here in Alaska, be it in Anchorage or McCarthy/Kennicott.

8. You contact us with questions/concerns as they arise. What's on your mind?

9. Upon your arrival in McCarthy/Kennicott -
*For those coming on a pre-trip hike on the Root Glacier we recommend bringing your overnight backpacks to our office and Backpacking Prep area in Kennicott. Your guide will go over final gear, clothing, and food preparation with you after your glacier hike. In addition, you and your guide will fill out a pre-trip itinerary form as final review and as a platform for discussing possible scenarios related to potential delays or problems.
*If you won't be coming out on the Root Glacier ahead of your trip, or if your trip is out to the Root Glacier, we'll set up a meeting with you either at our Prep area in Kennicott, or at your place of lodging or camping. You can anticipate an hour or so reviewing gear, clothing, and taking care of last-minute questions, preparation, and paperwork.

10. THE TRIP: Guide will confirm your means of transportation to airstrip or to Kennicott for trip departure. You may leave any baggage with us you'd like to store for the duration of your trip.

11. Air Service returns you to lodging, KWG has any stored gear there waiting for you, along with Post-Trip Evaluation (requested, thank you). Let us know ahead of time and we will arrange a nice dinner at one of the lodges upon your return.

12. Continue to use Kennicott Wilderness Guides as a resource while in McCarthy/Kennicott, or for information regarding the rest of your travels through Alaska. We offer ice climbing, as well as camping at our alpine perch some 2,000 feet above Kennicott, with great access to alpine ridges and mining ruins.

14. Tell Your Friends About Us!
